Understanding Spinal Epidural Abscesses

May 5, 2025

A spinal epidural abscess is a serious infection that develops in the epidural space between the spine bones and the spinal cord. In general, spinal epidural abscesses are caused by bacteria reaching the epidural space from infections in other body parts, such as strep throat or skin infections.

The most common symptoms associated with a spinal epidural abscess include back pain, fever, and neurological deficits like numbness or weakness of the arms or legs, or loss of bowel or bladder control.

The diagnosis of spinal epidural abscesses is usually made based on the findings of a physical examination and imaging studies, including MRI or CT scans.

If left untreated, a spinal epidural abscess can lead to paralysis and even death. Accordingly, early diagnosis and treatment of spinal infections, including spinal epidural abscesses, is crucial to prevent long-term complications.
