Treating Mini-strokes Could Help Reduce Future Risk

November 15, 2021

Strokes are very serious medical conditions that must be addressed quickly. Approximately 140,000 people die of stroke each year in the United States alone. That’s nearly 1 out of every 20 fatalities.

While strokes remain a mystery in terms of treatment, progress has been made that shed new light on ways to prevent them. In fact, research proved that the treatment of mini-strokes reduced the risk of suffering a serious stroke later.

We have the results of these studies, so read on to learn more about them and what this means for stroke patients worldwide.

New Stroke Treatment: Where It Started

The new stroke treatment data comes from the combined efforts of French and British doctors. In their studies, the doctors found that patients treated for mini-strokes were far less likely to suffer a serious stroke in the next three months. However, the mini-strokes must be treated within 24 hours.

If you do seek treatment in that timeframe, you are 80% less likely to have a bigger stroke later. This is a breakthrough in stroke treatment that could eventually lead to permanent treatment. The problem with patients who suffer mini-strokes is that many fail to seek medical attention right away. Some wait several days if they seek medical care at all.

As such, it is imperative that physicians, hospitals, and other medical providers look at mini-strokes as medical emergencies. With fast action comes a greater chance of preventing serious strokes in the future. Thus, you must make sure that you tell your loved ones (and yourself) to take your mini-strokes very seriously. As it turns out, it could be a matter of life and death down the road.

Oxford University’s Dr. Peter Rothwell conducted research among some 600 mini-stroke patients and found that those who sought treatment within a 24-hour period significantly minimized their chances of suffering a major stroke soon — so much so that they only had a 2% chance of it.

But the patients who waited to seek medical attention had a 10% chance of suffering a major stroke. The results of the research speak for themselves: Patients who take immediate action to address mini-strokes prolong their health and life by a sizable margin.

You Had a Stroke. Now What?

It’s important to note that all strokes should be taken seriously. While mini-strokes aren’t typically as serious as major strokes, even the small ones can be deadly. As such, you must treat mini-strokes like your life depends on them because it very well could.

Going forward, you must make a commitment to seek medical attention with every stroke you suffer, so matter how insignificant it might seem at the time. If you or a loved one had a stroke, go to the emergency room right away to ensure that you get the care you need. In doing so, you will reduce your chances of suffering a more serious stroke in the near future.

If you sought medical attention for a mini-stroke but received delayed treatment, it’s important that you contact a medical malpractice attorney right away. It’s possible that delaying your care put you at risk of having a major stroke, as detailed above.

This is a very serious matter that must be addressed by an experienced medical malpractice attorney.
